My fire pit has no cover so rain gets in and soaks the rocks and rusts the basin. To combat this I had been just putting the thing in the garage but it's taking up space! So I got a 2 ft. square "low carbon" 26 gauge steel sheet from Lowes. I used tin snips to cut little 2 each squares out of the corners and used a shock break to bend the sides up. I then used the vary squares I cut as braces on the inside, predrilled holes for rivets and used a hand-riveter to pop in some aluminum rivets in the corners and drilled holes for handles (cheapo 10 for $10 from amazon). After some hammering and grinding to soften edges and corners I was ready for a few coats of spray paint on the cover and varnish on the handles. A quick install of handles with the screws the came with from the inside of the cover the whole thing is done. Looks awesome and no I can leave the pit outside. Thanks to everyone who helped this electrical engineer do some light metal shop work. Maybe I'll use the welder next time!
