My Roku remote got some gunk on the buttons and needed a cleaning so I figured I'd open it up and take some pics while I'm in there cleaning. You can see a few interesting things:
- Ozmo2000 chip: Big chip in the middle is a wifi transceiver. Didn't realize this remote had direct wifi capabilities... figured it just talked to the roku base station through IR like a normal remote.
- AIC3204 chip: chip in bottom middle is an audio codec. Why would a remote have that inside it? Because for some reason Roku thought it was clever to add an audio jack for headphones on the side of the remote so you can listen to what you're watching with no external speakers. I've never had the urge to use it... Oh this is probably why they have the wifi transceiver built in, so the base station can cast the audio to the remote since the normal IR path wouldn't be enough data probably.
- AUB 305BQ chip: On the top left is a big chip I couldn't find any info on. I suspect this is the microcontroller or ASIC that runs the whole remote and holds the codes for the button pushes back to the base station.
- Gold chip at the top: that's the IR LED that sends out the signal. There's actually 2, one on each side. Not sure why they thought it necessary to have this redundant path. In the housing of the remote there is a light beam prism thingy that bends the LED pointing down so it comes out of the front of the remote. So you have one coming out the front and another out the top.
